The Spirit of Ramadan

Imagine how refreshing a glass of cold juice would feel or how sweet a date would taste after a whole day of fasting. For Muslims around the world, this is the satisfaction gained when they sit down to enjoy a good meal together with their family and friends in the evening.

This Ramadan month brought a memorable get together among Meloritans. Themed as the Arabian Fiesta and held at VE Hotel and Residence, Bangsar, we were all dressed in colourful traditional costumes and observed a night of breaking fast with our Muslim colleagues. Not forgetting our dear colleagues from our branch offices who took their time to travel down to KL to be a part of this event. It was a heart-warming session to see everyone conversing and enjoying a good meal together.

With a great line-up of mouth-watering mixed Arabian and local delicacies, there was no stopping for some of us! There was also a traditional game competition and those picked to participate in this competition were tested on their Batu Seremban skills. This brought back good old memories from our schooling days and surprisingly many had kept their skills for years!

The night fell in and with at least 3 hours spent at the event, we departed the venue with a spirit of togetherness. With Hari Raya around the corner, we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Selamat Hari Raya and enjoy this holy month of Ramadan.

NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS (By Kanya)

The first time I met Nur Hazwani was in a road show in Melaka. She was a person that never gave up in pursuing her dreams in international nursing. A bubbly and happy go lucky person in nature, Nur had the determination that she wanted to live comfortably with great financial freedom in order to upgrade herself and to support her family whom she loves the most.

Her application was rejected at the very first time she walked in for the road show, but she did not NO for an answer. She visited us again and immediately was given forms to fill. From that time on, she knew that she is on the journey receive her dream job soon!

Days went by, weeks and months passed by, and she was anxiously contacting me to know her update and the only answer I had for her was to keep her spirit high, think positive, be patience and pray. Yes, she did until one day she appeared in office to receive and sign off her offer letter from a client hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I still remember how excited she was on the day.

Today, Nur is a Staff Nurse in King Abdul Aziz Medical City, Riyadh and is attached to the Acute Surgical Unit. Meeting with her a few months ago made me think how international nursing has changed a life of a nurse. I have seen many nurses returning from the Kingdom and visiting us at our offices. What impresses me the most is how they carry themselves with great happiness and yes, certainly they have reached the peak of having a comfortable life.

“I am a million miles away from my family, in a foreign land. The language and culture is a big barrier to me but I was determined to pick it up with the help of my friends around. Being alone in a new place is quite challenging, but as a person who loves challenges, I had overcome every obstacle when I newly reached the Kingdom and now I feel that I am a part of it. The more you prepare yourself mentally, physically and emotionally, the more you can overcome challenges and gain great experience. I would like to thank Melorita Healthcare for making my dream come true. Melorita is the best!” –Nur Hazwani Bt Ja’afar

During her career in the Kingdom, Nur has travelled to many different countries, met new friends and made frequent visits back to Malaysia to visit her friends, family and even us! She had a big smile when I met during her last visit to Melorita.

Thank you, Nur for allowing Melorita to be a part of your life. We wish you the very best in your career pathway!

7 Secrets To Achieving Better Work-Life Balance As a Nurse

With an often tight and busy schedule, nurses often do not get the essential work life balance, which requires good time management skills for a healthier lifestyle. Here are some tips for you to take into consideration to keep up with your work without compromising your well-being.

Know your situation
One of the first things you have to do is to assess your situation. Evaluate where most of your time goes and where you want to focus more. Busyness is something you choose and you can always make a different choice.

Be honest about yourself so you’d know exactly which areas you’re paying less attention to. Remember that you won’t be able to work on all areas of your life at once so know how to prioritize depending on your age, situation or status.

Address conflicts
Relationship conflicts can drain your energy. They can take off your focus and concentration at work and these can spell problems for your patient and the hospital. Medication errors, for example, can easily happen when you are distracted.

To solve the issue, don’t hesitate to engage in necessary conversations with your co-worker or your family. Don’t judge into conclusions and be open to what they have to say. Talk about how you feel and what you can do to ease the tension.

If it’s your co-worker, be open for feedbacks. Ask for some help if you need to and don’t hesitate to offer a hand when you’re free. Fulfill your duties and responsibilities as much as possible. For your family, make sure to set aside some time for them. Go out and treat them to lunch once in a while.

Learn how to say no
Whether it’s the supervisor or your co-worker asking you extend your working hours, be comfortable in saying no, especially if that is what you really mean. Saying yes when you really don’t feel like doing it can only make you regret the decision later on. Worse, it might even affect the way you deliver care to your patients.

“One time, a patient came up to me to complain about one of the nurses. The patient was extremely dissatisfied that the nurse was frowning the entire shift and was looking annoyed each time the patient asked questions. It turned out that it was the same nurse I asked earlier that day to work an extra 4 hours to cover a sick nurse’s shift,” a nurse supervisor shared.

Schedule rest
No matter how busy you get or how often you do night shifts, it’s essential that you get enough rest and sleep. Remember, you are a nurse and you need to be fit physically, mentally, and emotionally when dealing with patients.

Although going out with your friends and engaging in a hobby can help you achieve better work-life balance, it doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice your sleep. If you need to go out, schedule it after you’ve rested.

Do something that makes you feel good
Whether it’s soaking in a warm bubble bath or gardening, if it nurtures your soul, just do it. Schedule it in your week and prioritize it during your free days. Take care of not just your body, but your spirit, emotions, and intellect, too. It’s one of the best ways to combat stress and burnout.

Pay attention to your body
When you’re a nurse, it’s quite easy to neglect your own health. You can skip lunch, drinking water or taking your vitamins when you’re too busy making sure your patients are full, hydrated and healthy.

If you feel like a cold is coming or you feel pain on your back or feet, take the necessary interventions. See a doctor when you need to and make sure that you give yourself the tender, loving care you freely give to other people.

Excercise
Exercise is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get rid of depression and stress. You can enroll in a Pilates or Yoga class. If attending a special class isn’t your cup of tea, you can always do a 10-minute walk or run outside your home or on your way to the hospital. If budget permits, you can invest in exercise equipment and do your workout at home.

Exercise can help you recharge and clear your mind, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed. Apart from that, it can also help you shed off some extra weight.
